Past Conference Highlights2012 Pawley's Leadership ConferenceThe students that attended the Pawley's Island Leadership Conference in late September worked to improve the Model Legislative and Court Conference for this coming year. Great ideas came out of the conference and we are all looking forward to introducing them to you in November!
2012 National Judicial Program (NJP) In July 2012,Y USA held the first annual National Judicial Program for Youth in Government programs across the nation. South Carolina sent a group of teens to the conference. The following students went to Chicago to compete in the national mock trial competition:
The South Carolina group, broken up into different teams, won many awards while at the conference:
Congratulations goes out to all the delegates and a huge thank you to the following people: Greg Cook (who coached some of our students), Carolina Worthy (who came to Chicago to assist as a mock trial coach and advisor) and Greg Snoad (who assisted as an advisor and who oversaw the appellate side of the conference). 2012 Conference on National Affairs (CONA) This year, the following students went to Black Mountain, NC to debate issues with other YIG students from all over the country:
A big thank you goes out to Scott Cunningham and Jason Hill, who served as advisors for the CONA group.
2012 Horizons Values Conference Horizons Values Conference, held at the YMCA's Camp Greenville, is different from YIG's traditional conferences. Instead of debating, participants are split into small groups that we call families and spend the weekend discussing values challenges they face. In addition to discussions, families compete against each other in a talent show and Bedlam Ball. Horizons, like many of our conference, is run by resource staff. We are thankful to have such a great group of college students and adults working with our high school students.
This family won the annual 'Bedlam Ball' game. 2011 Model Legislature and Court Conference In November, more than 1,000 students from all over the state come together to participate in a three-day conference at the Statehouse in Columbia. Participants can choose one of the following roles:
