The YMCA of Greenville is celebrating Water Safety Awareness Month by offering a free American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification course to anyone 18 or older in Greenville County.
Tryouts will be held on Friday, May 17 between 1-7 p.m. with an American Red Cross certified lifeguard instructor at the Caine Halter Family YMCA. Stop by anytime during that window and see if you are up to the challenge!
The skill tryouts will consist of:
Part 1: Swim 300 yards non-stop (100 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Either of the Two)
Part 2: 2 Minutes treading water with hands above water surface
Part 3: Timed 50 yard swim, 10 lb brick dive in deep end, and two hand brick carry back to shallow water.
After tryouts, you will be invited to attend the course that is on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. There will be lunch breaks provided. Participants will take a written and practical exam on Sunday the 19th, and once they have passed, they will be awarded certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Basic Life Support, and Basic First Aid.
