The YMCA of Greenville is celebrating Water Safety Month by offering a free YMCA Lifeguarding Certification course to anyone 21 or older in Greenville County.
Applicants will take a pre-test with a Y certified lifeguard instructor at any YMCA of Greenville pool. After passing the pre-test, applicants can finish their registration. Pretests are being held 9-11 a.m. My 12, 5-7 p.m. May 14, and 5-7 p.m. May 16.
The three-phase pretest consists of:
Phase 1: Tread water for two minutes, then swim 100 yards front crawl
Phase 2: Swim 50 yards of each:
- Front crawl with head out of the water
- Breaststroke with head out of the water
- Elementary backstroke kick with hands on chest or stomach.
Phase 3: Swim three-fourths the length of the pool, surface dive to the bottom of 8-10 feet, pick up a diving ring off the bottom, swim up and hold the ring over head while treading water with no hands for 1 minute, then immediately climb out of the pool and deliver 100 compressions on a mannequin.
After the pre-test, visit the Welcome Center at your Y to complete your registration for the Lifeguarding course. The certification class will run on May 18-20 (Friday 4-9pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-6pm) at the Eastside Family Y – 1250 Taylors Road.
