Our pools are mixed-use. That means you're welcome to use them for recreation when programming isn't scheduled. Every day, our pools host lap swimmers, swim lessons, swim academy practices, aqua aerobics classes, and families enjoying free swim time together. We want everyone to enjoy our facilities safely. That's why we require the following:

  • Swimmers must have an adult guardian in the pool within arm's reach at all times.
  • Swimmers must have an adult guardian on deck or in the pool at all times AND
  • Swimmers also must either pass a swim test OR wear an approved lifejacket in the pool area.
  • Swimmers need to pass a swim test OR wear an approved lifejacket in the pool area.
  • Adult supervision is not required.
  • Jump into the pool, submerge fully, return to the surface and begin swimming.
  • Swim 25 yards without stopping or touching the bottom of the pool in a horizontal position using a forward crawl stroke.
  • The swimmer's arms must achieve full extension in every stroke and he or she must maintain the stroke for the full 25 yards.
  • Tread water for 60 seconds
  • Exit the pool without assistance, using the wall.
  • Swimmers are required to retest annually beginning each May and can be required to repeat the swim test at any point at a lifeguard's discretion.

SEVERE WEATHER PROCEDURE:

In the event that lightning or thunder is present in, around, or within a 10-mile radius of the facility:

The YMCA of Greenville requires immediate closure of all pools, the hot tub, sauna and steam room. All areas of the pool will remain closed until 30 minutes has passed from the last visible lightning strike or episode of thunder. The decision is made at the discretion of Aquatics Leadership or the on-duty lifeguard.

Lightning is generally thought of as a threat to outdoor facilities, but there is also a threat of electrocution inside the building. This policy follows the recommendations of Y-USA, the American Red Cross, Redwoods Group, American Meteorological Society and several other industry leading agencies.

The YMCA closes indoor pools during thunderstorms as a safety precaution due to the risk of electrocution. Lightning can travel through plumbing, electrical systems, and the ground, potentially shocking people in or near the water, even indoors.
