HELP KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE. Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Drowning can happen nearly anywhere with standing water. But, as a parent or caregiver, you can’t keep your children sidelined. You need to equip them with the tools they need to be confident in and around water so they don’t lose out on the health benefits of exercise, the opportunities to bond with family and friends and the sense of accomplishment when they learn new skills.

YMCA SPLASH Day can help you make sure they learn essential water safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely.

Mark Your Calendar! SPLASH Day is Saturday, June 1st!

SPLASstands for:
Supervision: Designate an adult to watch children at all times. Do not assume someone else is watching.
Prevention: Wear personal flotation devices (PFD or life jacket), install fencing around pools, and use drain covers in hot tubs and pools.
Look before you leap: Never jump into water without knowing how deep it is and what is below the surface.
Arm's Length: Adults should be arm's length to children in water, and safety tools such as hooks should be nearby at all times.
Swim Lessons: Knowing how to swim greatly reduces the chance of drowning. Classes are often available through the Red Cross or YMCA.
Have a water safety plan: Know what to do during an emergency.

Water safety programs are taught by a certified instructor, who teaches children two sets of skills that will reduce the risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water. A typical session includes:

  • Basic pool rules that keep you safer around water
  • What to do if someone needs help in the water
  • How to get to safety if you jump in water over your head
  • How to keep yourself safe if you cannot get to a safe point
  • When and how to properly wear a life jacket
  • Boating and Lake Safety

We will be teaching all participants -- ages 3-12 years old -- basic comfort and survival swimming skills while working toward building confidence around water and will cover topics such as:

  • Pool Rules/Lifejackets
  • Throw, Don’t Go
  • Jump, Push, Turn
  • Swim, Float, Swim
  • Boat / Lake Safety

We will also offer a session for parents and 18-months-old or older only at our Caine Halter Family YMCA and will cover topics similar to our Water Exploration classes such as:

  • Introduction of lifejackets
  • Entering and exiting the pool
  • Lifeguards and their roles
  • Sunscreen safety
  • Additional safety around pools/lakes/oceans
